Six tips for getting your home cleaner than it’s ever been, and keeping it that way

Unless you have unlimited time on your hands, it’s going to be hard to get the whole house clean.

More than that, it’s going to be harder to keep it that way. Luckily for you, it doesn’t have to be.

Are you already dreading your next cleaning day? Here are six tips for getting your home cleaner than it’s ever been–and keeping it that way.

Dispose and declutter

The first step to getting a cleaner house is decluttering. Unnecessary clutter can take up valuable space in your home and collect dust. Even worse, it can create a home for germs and pests. Yikes!

Moreover, too much clutter can trigger anxiety and stress, make you tired, and affect your home life on a daily basis. Therefore, the only way you can start getting a cleaner house is to declutter your space. An easy way you can do this is to:

  • Dispose of items that cannot be recycled or given away anymore. Remember: if you don’t need it, throw it out!
  • Donate clothes, toys, and other items that are still presentable. If other people can still make use of it, pack it in a box for donation.
  • Recycle anything that can be taken to the recycling center.
  • Sell things that still have market value

Vacuum carpeted floors regularly

Lack of vacuuming can negatively affect both your family’s health and your floorings. If you skip the vacuuming say, for a few weeks or so, things such as bacteria, dander, allergens, and dust can build up on your floors.

For carpeted floors, the frequency of vacuuming will depend on how much traffic your floors get and the type of carpet. For areas that get a lot of foot traffic, vacuum at least twice a week. On the other hand, for less-trafficked areas, a good once-over should do the trick.

But if you have pets, that is a whole other story. Daily vacuuming is required if you have furry friends in your home, especially if they shed frequently. Otherwise, your floors may be littered with dander and fleas that can cause allergies and disease.

Deep clean at least once a month

Deep cleaning is necessary if you don’t want to end up with a more laborious cleanup job in the long run. For the spaces that we skip during maintenance cleaning, a good deep clean once a month should prevent excessive build-up of dirt and germs. Of course, if you live with a bigger household, deep cleaning should be done more frequently.

Set up a cleaning schedule

Even if you have a full-time job, sticking to cleaning schedule isn’t that difficult. That is if you plan it out efficiently. The trick to keeping the house clean is creating and sticking to a daily schedule. In this way, you know you’re not missing out on anything that needs to be cleaned, and you get less stressed about it.

Create a list of what needs to be done, and when it should be done. Split your household cleaning routines into daily, weekly, and monthly lists. For example:

  • Monthly
    • Carpet shampooing
    • Garage cleaning
    • Cleaning the windows
    • Sanitize the washing machine
  • Weekly
    • Monday – Laundry
    • Tuesday – Clean kitchen
    • Wednesday – Clean bathrooms
    • Thursday – Vacuum floors
    • Friday – Decluttering
  • Daily
    • Make the bed
    • Take out the trash
    • Wash the dishes
    • Sweep the floor

Make sure your cleaning cabinet is stocked

You can’t clean if you don’t have the right supplies for it. Having said that, always keep your cleaning supplies well-stocked with multi-purpose cleaner, baking soda, sponges, cleaning rags, and the like. If you want, you can also make your own cleaning solvents to avoid the chemicals in commercially-available ones.

Clean hardwood floors

Hardwood floors can be tricky to clean if you don’t know what to use. Sweeper and a mop? Those won’t do much good for your wooden floors (at least not for deep cleaning). Now, a hardwood floor vacuum is different. With this type of vacuum, you can clean up dust and debris without damaging your wooden finish. Are you interested in getting one for your home? View now.
