Mayor launches initiative to tackle low pay and lack of diversity in London businesses

Sadiq Khan initiative

London mayor Sadiq Khan is today launching an initiative to boost pay and working conditions in the capital.

He will be seeking the advice of businesses on how best to tackle low pay, but has already come up with some “essential requirements” that will be asked of firms that sign up to his new set of standards, City AM reports.

These requirements are likely to involve businesses paying employees the London living wage rate of pay, and committing to a measures designed to defend workers’ rights.

Businesses will also be encouraged to promote flexible working, diversity and more skills training for employees.

The mayor intends to collect business’ opinions in a series of public sessions.

Khan said: “I promised to be the most pro-business mayor London has ever seen and I firmly believe that a strong economy and a fairer city should go hand in hand.

“London is the best city in the world in which to do business; I want it to be the best city in the world in which to work as well.”
