European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on Tuesday that there will be no renegotiation over Theresa May’s agreed deal.
Concerns are growing in the EU over the contest for leadership within the Tory party over each candidate’s different opinion and approach to Brexit, this could trigger confrontation with the bloc.
Boris Johnson said last week the UK should leave without a deal whilst Jeremy Hunt has said it would be “political suicide” to pursue a no-deal Brexit.
Juncker said in Brussels, “I will have a short meeting with Theresa May, but I was crystal clear: There will be no renegotiation.”
Whoever takes over May’s leadership will have to accept the deal she agreed with EU leaders as it will not be ratified, and the new leader will have to find a solution to the Irish border.
Leo Varadkar, the Irish prime minister said, “Well I think there is a growing risk of a no deal. There’s a possibility that the new British prime minister may try to repudiate the withdrawal agreement.”
