Brexit campaigner and former foreign secretary, Boris Johnson has confirmed that he will throw his hat in the ring and run for the Conservative Party leadership when Theresa May steps down.

When asked at a business event in Manchester, Mr Johnson replied: “Of course I’m going to go for it.”

Although a date has still not been set for Mrs May’s departure, it was revealed by Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee that the decision would now take place after the House of Commons votes on her Brexit bill in June.

This decision was made following a meeting between the prime minister and the 1922 committee of backbench Conservative MPs on Thursday
