Graham Richardson talks to Business Matters about why he believes laughter is the best medicine in the workplace.
What do you currently do?
I am the Group Managing Director at Johnsons of Whixley. We are growers, suppliers and re-wholesalers of garden and landscape trees and shrubs. Selling six million plants annually, our produce enriches civil engineering schemes and private gardens throughout the UK. We are ‘net’ contributors to the environment.
What was the inspiration behind your business?
The business was bought over 50 years ago as an existing concern and is approaching its centenary in 2021. Our motivation is our family, our workforce and the fact that our hard work always results in an inspirational outcome in the environment.
What defines your way of doing business?
Hard graft, professionalism, integrity and a tendency to say ‘yes’ when others can’t.
What do you admire?
Success and achievement via hard work and endeavour. Honesty and a sense of humour (a lot can be achieved via laughter).
Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently?
Always. But I believe in learning from one’s mistakes and not making them twice! This is what helps us to keep growing and supporting the needs of our customers.
What advice would you give to someone starting out?
Define your objectives and principals and stick with them.
