Our recommendations on energy-efficient electric radiators

Radiator

Electric radiators are a great energy-efficient choice to enjoy warmth during the winter. If you want to install electric heating, but are worried about high bills, here we show you how to choose the most suitable energy-efficient radiators to give you the comfort you want, with maximum energy savings.

The best electric radiators save energy i.e., it does not consume too much electricity. But energy-saving is not the only factor to take into account when choosing the best electric radiators. The number of hours a day that you plan to use it is crucial. If you want to use the radiator daily for several hours, you have to choose a model that will continue to radiate warmth, even if it is switched off.

Moreover, if you want to reduce energy consumption consider choosing an electric radiator equipped with a high precision thermostat.

Electric radiators are often overlooked as a primary heating source, with many deeming them expensive to install and costly to run. This is not the case.

WHAT ARE ELECTRIC RADIATORS?

Electric radiators convert electrical energy into heat. They are one of the cleanest and most efficient options on the market, at the point of use. Even though we still use fossil fuels to generate electricity, we are leaning more towards smarter methods like hydro, solar and wind. Electricity then becomes “renewable” without the harmful effect of fossil fuels. Therefore, electric radiators have a small carbon footprint and use 100% of the energy directly where and when it’s needed.

Electric radiators can also be known as space radiators, as they are used to warm interiors or “spaces” of buildings. Generally, they are easy to install, require no pipework, chimneys or flues, require little maintenance compared to a gas system and are virtually silent. They are a great option for heating any home.

They are considered one of the safest options on the market because they don’t use combustion, heavy metals or emit harmful gases like carbon monoxide. There is also a lower risk of ignition if they make unintended contact with furnishings.

BUYING GUIDE: WHICH ELECTRIC RADIATORS TO BUY?

There is a wide range of efficient electric radiators for sale at affordable prices. Electric radiators are a great option if you don’t want to invest in a high initial outlay or too much monthly maintenance.

Manufacturers make sure that consumers have a wide selection of models, so you can choose the best electric radiators for your needs.

ELECTRIC RADIATORS WITH THERMAL FLUID

They are the most frequently electric radiators, and in fact, our best recommendation. Their success is based on the fact that they offer a more pleasant comfort, thanks to the dissipation of heat through the perfect combination of radiation (which offers heat when we are near the product) and natural air convection (which allows the heat to be carried to all corners of the room).

Even after the radiator is switched off, the heat in the room can remain for several hours. We recommend installation of electric radiators in homes of allergy sufferers as they don’t generate draughts.

Another advantage to electric radiators is that they need a short time to provide heat to the room, in addition to their low price and compact dimensions.

Electric radiators often use aluminium as the main material in their body. This is because aluminium is a high-quality material with good thermal conductivity. It’s also lightweight yet durable, resistant to corrosion and non-toxic, making it an excellent material to use in electric radiator design.

ELECTRIC RADIATORS WITH CERAMIC CORE

Electric radiators consist of an aluminium casing with a ceramic core that houses the electrical heating elements or resistance.

This resistance heats the core to a very high temperature. Once the necessary temperature is reached, the core (which functions as a large heat accumulator) slowly transfers it to the environment through the dissipation of the outer aluminium body.

As a result, the radiator consumes electricity for a period of time, but emits heat for a long time afterwards. There are heaters with powers ranging from 0.4 to 3 kW, in various sizes, which allow the radiator to be easily fitted to the place of installation.

GAS CENTRAL HEATING RADIATORS

These are radiators filled with water, which is heated from a central boiler (typically gas fired, although there are electric versions available). As the world moves towards reducing its carbon footprint, this type of heating will eventually become obsolete as gas is phased out. We don’t recommend installing this type of system in a new build for this reason, and also because although they can heat the house and even provide hot water, their efficiency is far below that of other heating systems due to the complicated pipe installation involved (which maximises heat loss through walls and floors).

HEATERS WITH THERMO-FAN

This type of equipment sucks in cold air and expels it as heated. This air is heated by an electric spiral placed in the centre of the fan. The heat is spread throughout the room very quickly thanks to the fan, so you don’t have to wait long to feel the heat.

Despite this, they are much less efficient than the other heating products mentioned. In addition, the heat disappears quickly when the product is turned off. They are more suited to provide a short blast of heat if you’re not going to be in a room for very long.

INFRARED HEATER

They are also known as halogen or radiant radiators. They directly warm people and objects in a room, rather than space itself. You have to be physically close to the heater to feel the warmth.

They have a short range (usually no more than 10 metres in the most powerful models) and reach a high temperature to emit the infrared radiation. On most models, a metal grill is located in front of the heating element to try to prevent contact. The grill itself will become hot to the touch the longer the heater is left on.

Infrared radiators are most suited for warming people in poorly insulated rooms or outdoors.

WHICH ELECTRIC RADIATORS SHOULD I CHOOSE?

There is no definitive answer to this question, as it depends on your individual needs, as well as on the characteristics of the room where it will be installed.

From an economic point of view, electric radiators with thermal fluid offer the best quality/price ratio for an average home.

They are the most energy efficient electric radiators and their operating cost depends on the user to a great extent. For example, you can reduce consumption by using the daily and weekly programming, activating it only when you are at home.

ADVANTAGES OF ELECTRIC RADIATORS

There are many reasons why you should consider installing energy-saving electric radiators with thermal fluid. The most important ones are:

  • Easy and economical installation: you can do it yourself
  • Wide range of sizes available
  • High-precision digital temperature control
  • Quiet operation and virtually no maintenance
  • Freedom to expand the heating system to suit your needs
  • Safe system for allergy sufferers, children and elderly
  • Availability of daily and weekly programming with energy saving functions
  • Slow and gentle heat dissipation that reaches every corner of the room
  • Guarantee of up to 10 years on some products

CONVENIENCE AND SAFETY OF USE

Modern energy-saving electric radiators are not only efficient, but also safe for all family members. Thanks to the high efficiency and quality of its materials, the body of the radiator does not overheat, minimising the risk of burns, even when the heating product is used at full power.

Furthermore, electric radiators are equipped with additional protection against overheating, which significantly prolongs their service life. It is not surprising that this type of radiator is an increasingly popular alternative for heating homes in our country.

HOW MUCH DO EFFICIENT ELECTRIC RADIATORS COST?

The important thing is to choose the electric radiator that will guarantee an optimal level of heat, well-being and comfort with maximum efficiency. We always recommend choosing electric radiators with a thermostat and technology that optimises consumption and maintains stable room temperatures.

A mistake that many people make is to be guided only by the price and to choose the cheapest solution. Cheap radiators have low efficiency, higher failure rates and low-quality materials, which can significantly increase the running costs.

Choosing quality efficient electric radiators for your home heating allows you to enjoy a warm winter without excessively increasing your bill, provided they are sized correctly for the room and the user optimises the programming capability.

We hope that we have been able to help you in choosing the best electric radiators for your heating system adapted to your individual needs.
