Natwest and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) customers have seen their credit cards locked after a glitch at Tesco’s petrol stations, reports The Telegraph.
Reports of the problems spread on social media, with many customers saying they were unable to pay for fuel.
It is the latest in a series of technical glitches associated with RBS credit and debit cards, although the bank insisted that it was a problem on Tesco’s side.
Millions of shoppers were unable to use their cards on the busiest online shopping day of the year last month, and a glitch earlier in the year forced then-chief executive Stephen Hester to waive his bonus.
Shoppers were unable to pay for fuel when using Tesco’s pay at pump feature, because their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) were not accepted even when entered correctly. The issue has not affected kiosk payments.
Many found their cards locked when their PIN was registered as incorrect three times in a row.
The problem appears to be limited to Tesco’s pay at pump transactions, which require customers to enter their card details before fuelling the car, and to Natwest and RBS cards.
An RBS spokesman said the issues were a problem with Tesco’s technology. Tesco said: ““We are investigating reports of problems affecting some of our pay-at-pump services. We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused.”
