Government says businesses can avoid giving day off for Royal Wedding

The site tells employers they are under no obligation to provide additional paid leave under the European Working Time regulations.
It all depends on the wording of individual contracts, it said. “For example, if an employee’s contract says that they are entitled to, for example, 20 days annual leave in addition to all statutory, bank and public holidays, this would potentially mean they are entitled to an extra day’s paid holiday,” it stated.
BusinessLink is planning a new dedicated Royal Wedding business advice page: www.businesslink.gov.uk/royalwedding.
The website is likely to feature “guidance on the impact on staff morale if employers choose not to give them the day off”, a spokesman said.
