Make the most of your business this summer

It’s fair to say that many business owners rarely have any time off, let alone a summer holiday, and if they do it usually involves taking the laptop and BlackBerry away with them. Here Intuit UK shares five top tips to make the most of the summer months to ensure the business is productive and to leave a little time to enjoy the weather!

Take part in local summer event
Don’t let the summer months slow you down. Getting involved with local summer events, such as fetes and community festivals, can give you great brand exposure and can also introduce you and your company to new potential customers. Take a look at local newspapers, websites or talk to your local Chamber of Commerce to get an idea of what upcoming events could be relevant to your business.

Set up a company holiday plan
Everyone needs a holiday to get some well deserved rest and relaxation – but for a small business or sole trader it can be difficult to balance everyone’s requirements. Planning in advance can really help to smooth the whole process, so make sure everyone is aware of the process for booking annual leave. Try using a central calendar so people can check for clashes to avoid disappointment when they submit their annual leave request.

Add some sunshine to your store and website
Many retailers dress their shop windows for Christmas, so why not do the same for summer? Attractive displays in your shop can catch customers’ attention and differentiate you from competitors. This can also work well for other types of small businesses that aren’t necessarily shop-based. Adding a summer graphic here and there can make your website stand out from the crowd, keeping your business seasonal and original.

Get ready for autumn
Take advantage of the slower season by getting yourself prepped and ready for autumn. Now is a great time to ensure that your books are in order and you’re in a solid financial position before things pick up again in September. You can also use this time as an opportunity to review your annual business plan to check you’re on track to meet your objectives. You’ll thank yourself at the end of the year!

Treat yourself
Finally, don’t underestimate the power of injecting some fun into workplace this summer. Try bringing in ice cream on hot days, or holding a company picnic or sporting activity. If you’re a sole trader or home business owner, why not arrange to meet another small business owner for lunch? It’s motivating for staff and employer’s alike and most importantly, a little bit of sunshine is good for you!
