Curious about WoW Classic but aren’t quite sure where to start? This guide gives you a brief rundown of the game’s core aspects and activities to help you get ready for your first adventures in Azeroth.

What Is World of Warcraft Classic?

WoW Classic is a recreation of the original 2004 game with a handful of quality-of-life improvements added to make it more comfortable for today’s players and systems. Unlike the fast-paced modern version of WoW, Classic represents the MMO genre in its purest form, with slower levelling, minimal guidance, and an overall more deliberate, exploration-focused experience.

Classic itself is split into several distinct versions, each offering a slightly different take on the game:

  • Classic Era: A “frozen” version of original Vanilla WoW in its final pre-expansion stage.
  • Classic Fresh: Newly launched servers that have restarted the Classic experience and gradually roll out all original content phases over time.
  • Progression Classic: A version where expansions are re-released one by one, following their original order.
  • Seasonal Classic: It’s still Vanilla WoW but updated with new content. Currently, it’s on Season of Discovery, which is now in its final phase, with no further development planned.
  • Hardcore Classic: This version is also based on Vanilla WoW, but your character has only one life, and no revives are allowed.

The In-Game World

WoW’s open world is divided into numerous zones, each with its distinctive lore, atmosphere, level range, and sometimes even tied-in activities. All zones are populated by various enemy creatures, known as mobs.

The in-game world also includes major cities. These act as player hubs and safe zones, where you’ll find tons of useful NPCs and services, including:

  • Class Trainers: NPCs who teach your character new abilities and allow you to upgrade already learned skills.
  • Weapon Trainers: These guys unlock new weapon types for your character and improve your proficiency with them.
  • Profession Trainers: NPCs who teach special trade skills known as professions (Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Herbalism, etc), which allow you to gather resources or craft items.
  • Merchants and Vendors, who sell equipment, profession supplies, recipes, and other useful things.
  • The Auction House: The game’s marketplace where you can trade items with other players.

If you ever get lost in a city or don’t know where a specific NPC is located, you can ask a City Guard for directions, and they’ll mark the exact location on your map.

What Is the Gameplay Like?

Your journey in WoW Classic begins with creating a character. You’ll customise their appearance, choose a class and a race, and pledge yourself to one of the game’s two factions, Alliance or Horde. After that, you’ll be sent to a starting zone to learn the gameplay basics, get acquainted with WoW’s combat and skill systems, and then set out on your first adventure.

Character progression is the main part of your WoW Classic experience. By killing mobs and taking part in various in-game activities, you’ll earn XP and gradually level up your character. The level cap in Vanilla WoW is 60; it increases in expansions and season-based versions of the game.

As you level, you’ll unlock new zones and content and get access to new abilities. Each level also rewards you with talent points, which can be spent across three different talent trees to unlock new abilities and passive bonuses. If you’re not happy with how your talent build turns out, you can reset the trees by paying gold to your class trainer.

Gold

Since we’ve already mentioned WoW Classic gold a few times, let’s break it down in more detail. Gold is the game’s main currency, and you’ll use it to pay for nearly every service and upgrade, including skill and weapon training, gear repairs, profession level-ups, mounts, and all Auction House purchases.

You can earn gold with professions by selling your crafts or gathered materials on the Auction House. You can also sell loot obtained from quests, dungeons, raids, or simple mob drops. On top of that, gold itself can drop from completing activities and defeating enemies. And if you play as a Mage or Warlock, you can also monetize your class abilities and earn some extra coins by selling portals, conjured food and water, or summons to other players.

What Activities Can You Take Part In?

PvE Content

  • Quests are missions given by NPCs that reward you with currency, materials, gear, and other useful items upon completion.
  • Dungeons are instanced co-op activities for groups of five players. Your team will need to work together to fight through packs of mobs and defeat bosses in order to earn rewards.
  • Raids are larger and more challenging instances for groups of 10 to 40 players. Raids feature tougher enemies, more complex mechanics, and some of the most powerful loot in the game.

PvP Content

The available PvP activities depend on which version of WoW Classic you’re playing.

  • Dueling allows you to fight other players one-on-one.
  • Battlegrounds offer large-scale PvP battles with specific objectives. Taking part in BGs gives you Honour points, reputation with PvP-related factions, and various other rewards. The Honour System itself consists of 14 ranks, each with its own set of exclusive rewards.
  • Arenas are smaller, more competitive PvP activities where it’s more about your skill and class knowledge rather than objectives. Arenas are only available in Progression Classic because they were introduced in The Burning Crusade expansion. They also come in a rated mode with a ranking system, additional currencies, and exclusive titles and rewards that can be earned during PvP seasons.

Final Word

Our guide covers only a small part of what WoW Classic has to offer, but it should be more than enough to give you a solid idea of what to expect.

Classic is often seen as a less beginner-friendly entry point into World of Warcraft, but don’t let this put you off. Yes, the game won’t hold your hand and will sometimes throw you in at the deep end, and that’s exactly what makes it so special. There’ll be challenges and confusing moments, but you’ll always have a huge and welcoming community to rely on, with guides to read, videos to watch, or fellow players ready to help, especially once you join a guild.

After all, WoW Classic is a kind of game where the journey matters far more than the destination, so don’t be afraid to dive in, take your time, and just enjoy every step of your adventure.
