Getting To Know You: Abdullah Sabyah, Co-founder, Rightangled

Abdullah Sabyah

Abdullah Sabyah is the scientist-entrepreneur and healthcare professional who co-founded Rightangled, an award-winning health tech company, he tells us the inspiration behind the firm.

Rightangled is a prime example of the success of the screening and diagnostics services industry. Since its creation five years ago, the company has doubled in size and reached new levels of investment. It has also proved hugely popular with savvy investors, and the company recently hit a funding cap limit of £500,000 on Crowdcube within a few days of launching the campaign.

This has enabled the company to rent new offices, hire new staff and helped position it to speed up its international growth in the gulf (UAE & Saudi Arabia), as well as USA. This is where much of the recent demand for the company’s products and services are coming from.

What do you currently do at Rightangled?

My primary job is to continue to give direction to the business so it can continue to grow at pace. This means a lot of my time is spent strategising or creating new products and services that create value for our customers, partners, and stakeholders. In order to make sure the company’s plans achieve fruition, I have become an self-professed expert in managing and allocating resources, hiring high calibre professionals, as well as marketing and social media. Like any businessperson who wants to be successful, I make sure I learn, and adapt to what Rightangled needs. That way I can truly understand the business and the home diagnostics market we operate in.

What was the inspiration behind your business?

The inspiration came from the realisation that we were able to deliver a better service from all other providers. To innovate a new model, to be delivered on a new system and a platform that could democratise remote testing experiences for users and healthcare professionals.

Who do you admire?

I like Mohammed Ali. I think he is a amazing person, well accomplished, funny and of course “the greatest”! I also appreciate anyone who is willing to risk everything for what they believe in. If you are willing to do that, then no matter how many times you fail, eventually you will be successful.

Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently?

I am relatively happy with the decisions I have made. Even the bad ones! I see everything as a learning experience, and rarely make the same mistake twice. I think I would have tried to go through all my mistakes much faster that I already did. That being said I wish I had learnt the value of crowdfunding sooner. It is a great way to raise capital quickly which can solve a lot of problems and open a number of doors.

What defines your way of doing business?

I think my team would link it to my 16personalities test result – which is ENTJ. ENTJs are described as strategic leaders, who are motivated to organise change. I am truly on a mission to raise awareness of the home diagnostics market, which is a game changer for time poor people, who find it difficult to go to clinics or wait for their test results to be sent back to them. Convenient and inexpensive home testing via online platforms are becoming more normal, but there is a lot more work to be done before they become the preferred method.

What advice would you give to someone starting out?

Start early and do not wait to gain the “experience”. If you believe in yourself and what you are doing, the rest will follow naturally.
