You might have heard of CBD oil. You might know that it`s something to do with cannabis, or that some people use it medicinally.
You might have seen reports about it in the news or being advertised in health food shops. There are a lot of misunderstandings about CBD oil, medical marijuana, it`s benefits, it`s legality and what we actually know about it. So here is it all explained – in the context of the UK, not the US or other European countries.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is a natural compound found in the marijuana plant. There are over 80 different active cannabinoids in the marijuana plant, of which CBD is just one. When CBD oil is made, the CBD is extracted from the plant, and it is then mixed with another oil – such as olive oil, coconut oil or hemp seed oil. This makes it easier to consume, as pure CBD oils are not easily absorbed into the human body.
CBD vs THC
One of the other compounds in the cannabis plant, is THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. This is the part of the plant which is psychoactive – that gives the feeling of being `high` when cannabis is consumed. It is also this part that is illegal in the UK. This means that if you are only consuming CBD with little or no THC, you are firstly doing so completely legally, and secondly notgoing to get the high that you would do from consuming `normal` marijuana.
The law in the UK on CBD Oils states that you must not buy or sell any substance with a level of THC above 0.2%. You shouldn`t be able to get these substances in the UK, but it is important to be aware of this, especially if you are buying products from overseas and bringing them back into the UK.
What Does CBD Oil Do?
Relatively recent science has discovered that we have an endocannabinoid system – a system in our bodies which is responsible for homeostasis – keeping your body balanced, dealing with pain, and dealing with inflammation. CBD can affect the endocannabinoid system, helping to stimulate some of its functions and therefore improve homeostasis, help to deal with pain, and reduce inflammation.
There are numerous illnesses and diseases that CBD is believed to be able to help with, such as fibromyalgia and anxiety, but until thorough research has been carried out in the UK, we are unable to give specific details on what CBD oil can be used to treat. We can, however, say that it is great for overall health and well-being.
How to Consume CBD Oil
There are a number of different ways that you can legally consume CBD oil, and which one you choose is down to you.
- CBD Oil eliquids – is where you add CBD liquid into a vaporiser or e-cigarette and inhale the vapour. This is fast and effective as the CBD will go straight into the bloodstream via the lungs. As the effect is very quick, you will be able to inhale as much or as little as you wish, giving you a great amount of control.
- CBD Oil Sprays – is another option for quick absorption. You take a few drops under the tongue and hold it there for between 30 and 90 seconds. The CBD is absorbed in the mouth by the mucous membranes, meaning that it doesn`t have to go through the whole digestive system, into the bloodstream. You will have complete dosage control as you can decide how many drops to take and when.
- CBD Oil Capsules – would usually consist of taking a capsule or pill and allowing the body to take in the CBD through the digestive system, in the same way as many other tablets work – as well as the nutrients from food. This is a method that takes longer to come into effect, and of course, you are limited to the strength of the pill or capsule. There is also the option of CBD edibles.
- CBD Oil Balms – such as creams and balms are a great way to use CBD oil, especially if you are using it for skin complaints and local pain relief. In this case, the CBD doesn`t enter the bloodstream, so you can use as much or as little as you like.
Scientists and medical professionals are getting very excited about the potentials of medical marijuana, and especially CBD. By being able to separate it out from other aspects of the cannabis plant, we are able to really begin to understand just what it can do.
